Running with Nike+

7 Mar Saturday's Run

Nike+ is one of my favorite running buddies. I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s time I give it the credit it deserves. Nike+, I ♥ you.

Product Review: Nike+ Running
What is Nike+? It’s a way to track your runs through your iPod Nano, iTouch/iPhone App, SportBand or SportWatch GPS. It started out with a sensor you could place in your Nike+ shoes – and you can still do that with the SportBand. Now, there’s an accelerometer in iPod Nano’s that tracks your steps, and of course GPS can track via the App or SportWatch. These devices track your runs (distance, pace, route), then sync them to the Nike+ website. No more tracking runs in notebooks – it’s all online now! Personally, I use the Nike+ iPhone App, though I might explore other options for summer so I don’t have to carry my phone!

Nike+ Runs

Nike+ Website shows Runs, PRs, and more

Here are some of the things I love about it:

  • You can run with OR without music: I’ve always got the app tracking my runs, even when I’m with a group.
  • You can share your runs socially: I have it synced to Twitter, so my runs are automatically tweeted to my account. I love the feedback and encouragement I get! I found that syncing to Facebook was too much. And, there’s a community within the website, so you can create challenges with fellow runners.
  • Tracking your running means you can compare year over year stats. For instance, here’s a screen shot of my 2011 Year In Review
Nike+ 2011 Year in Review

My 2011 Accomplishments. Bring it on 2012!

  • Coaching: You can find a training plan based on the distance you want to run. Then, you type in your race date, and Nike+ sets up a training schedule for you.
  • I love looking back at past race times. You can see your time and pace, but also calories burned and your mile splits.

Recently, Nike made updates to the site, making it run 25% faster. I haven’t noticed a huge change. A few issues I’ve experienced include:

  • The distances aren’t spot-on, but they’re close.
  • I accidentally end runs all the time – it’s frustrating to have to start over mid-run!
  • I hate not being able to get to the full site from my iPhone or iPad. Since the site is built with Flash, I can’t get to what I want, and sometimes I want more information than the apps or mobile site provide!

When I saw the announcement of the Nike+ FuelBand, I had hoped it would somehow connect with Nike+ running, or at least cause them to update the site.

Nike+ Running Update Coming this Summer
All this sounds great, right? But Nike is making updates this summer to make it even better – as they say, making the site “not only faster, but also smarter and more motivational.” Here are a few highlights:

  • HTML5 will replace the current flash interface, making it faster. It’ll also allow it to work better on mobile devices/iPads.
  • Personalization based on your running activity will allow Nike+ Running to suggest routes, training tips and goals.
  • Easier social sharing (?) – I’m not sure how, but since this is one thing I already love about Nike+, I look forward to more functionality!
  • More motivation with enhanced goal setting, leaderboards, and incorporation of NikeFuel (compare your activity with anyone, whatever sport they play). This speaks to incorporating with activities on the Nike+ Fuelband… which is something I’d love! I’m trying to do more cross-training, which I’d love ‘credit’ for.

Here’s the screen shot they shared in the announcement. What do you think?

Fuel | Jelly Belly Sport Beans Review

14 Feb Jelly Belly Sport Beans

Before marathon training, I never took any gels, water or fuel of any kind on long runs with me. But this minimalist mindset backfired on my first 16 mile run a few weeks back. I felt great during the run but as soon as I got in my car to drive home, I was hurting. Fortunately I made it home safely but I felt absolutely awful all night and could barely get anything in my stomach. I knew I would not make that mistake again!

Thanks to my non-runner boyfriend who bravely entered a running store and asked for “those jelly things” his girlfriend kept talking about, I have a small arsenal of training fuel (according to one of my Facebook friends: “It’s like the marathon emergency kit!”). Peering into my goodie bag of Gu’s and gummies, I decided to try out the Sport Beans by Jelly Belly on my long run this weekend.

Jelly Belly Sport Beans

While I was a little hesitant to try a “health” supplement produced by a candy company, I had heard good things about these from other runner friends. I threw two packets into the kangaroo pouch of my running jacket and set off in the 20 degree weather for my ten mile run.

The clickity-clacking of the jelly beans was. so. annoying. After a mile of trying to zone out and ignore the noise, I finally took one bag out of my pouch and shoved it in the elastic waistband of my tights. The one bag still made an annoying jostling noise but it was much more bearable than when there were TWO of them doing it.

At about 5 miles, we stopped for water so I took the opportunity to refuel. Thank goodness I wasn’t more tired or I don’t think I could have opened them! I think it was a mixture of fatigue and cold fingers, but it took me a solid minute to pry apart the resealable zipper.

Due to the cold weather, the jelly beans were more like hard candies so I had to pop a couple in my mouth at a time and let them thaw for a few seconds before biting into them.  I tried the Fruit Punch and yum, were they tasty! True to their candy background, they were definitely sweeter than any of the other supplements I’ve tried so far.

We continued on our run and I popped a few more in my mouth whenever I felt like it. Trying to reach into the tiny opening was annoying with gloves on so I started just dumping out a handful at a time.

The packet instructs you to “Always consume with water” but, well, I didn’t. I didn’t notice any negative side effects from this other than that super sweet taste lingering in my mouth a little longer than I would have liked.

Did I feel like I had more energy? I’d say they stacked up just as well as the other things I’ve tried, no better and no worse.

The Verdict

Things I Liked:

  • The taste! I could have happily eaten another pack as a snack to satisfy my sweet tooth.
  • The flexibility. Eat one, two or five at a time… however many you think you need.
  • Accessibility. I found these at the supermarket in the aisle with the protein bars and meal replacement shakes; all my other training supplements required a special trip to the running store.
  • Perfect for the everyday runner. The gels can be intimidating whereas these little guys definitely keep you the closest to your comfort zone. If you’re a first-timer like me, consider Sport Beans a good way to test the waters.

Things to Consider:

  • The package. If I were to use these again, I would open them ahead of time or just dump them out into another container. It was too difficult to open mid-run and the opening was too small if you wanted to just grab a couple.
  • The noise! Think about how these will bounce around when you run and keep that in mind when deciding how you’re going to carry them.
  • Too sweet? While it didn’t bother me much on this run, I could see these being too sweet on a longer, hotter or more intense run.

Overall they were one of the tastiest supplements I’ve had, but I wouldn’t use them again. They were more work than they were worth and seemed more like candy than something that would power me through 10 or more miles.

Winter Running Traction: Yaktrax Pro

27 Jan 20120127-080821.jpg

Historically, I’m a fair weather runner. I’m talking no rain, no wind, no sun and only running in a temperature range of 50 – 70 degrees. And definitely NO SNOW!
20120127-080612.jpg
I’m happy to report that I’m a changed woman. I’ve ran with my running club in the heat, rain, and even 10 degree weather. I’ve found it invigorating and personally motivating for me – and I can’t bring myself to ‘wimp out’ in bad weather now.

I wasn’t sure how to handle running in the snow safely. A few people recommended Yaktrax to help stabilize my footing in snow and on ice. So, after the first snow run of the year, I ordered them online in anticipation of a snowy winter. Unfortunately/fortunately (depending on how you feel about it), it just finally snowed again this weekend, so I finally got to try out my new gear. Here’s my take!

Product Review: Yaktrax Pro
In case you’re not famliar with this product, Here’s what the Yaktrax promises one their website:

The Yaktrax Pro will instantly give you better traction, confidence and safety on packed snow or ice. Walk, jog, or run on slick surfaces with the same stability you are accustomed to on dry surfaces. Made with high strength, abrasion resistant 1.4mm steel coils and heavy duty natural rubber, the Yaktrax Pro easily conforms to the shape of your boot or shoe. With its patented SkidLock coil design, the Yaktrax Pro provides 360˚ of traction. Additionally, the Yaktrax Pro sports a nylon hook and loop strap to ensure a secure fit around your shoe. Don’t let the winter weather put a damper on your outdoor activities or athletic training with the Yaktrax Pro!

Putting the Yaktrax on my shoes was pretty easy. They’re labelled to show which end goes at the front and back of the shoe. You have to stretch them around, then secure the velcro strap over the top. They felt like they were on securely (I’m a size 7.5, and ordered a size small) and they never felt loose or like they would fall off during the run.

When I left my house, walking on the cement in my garage felt a little weird and slippery. I started to worry that maybe I should’ve tested these out on a shorter run, since I was planning on going 12 miles! But once I got out on the snowy roads, they never felt strange again. The snow sort of packs up into the coils, so it stabilizes your foot.

I will say that the run was TOUGH. Running in the snow is not easy, and it feels like you’re running twice as hard. I can honestly say I probably would not have completed the full run if I didn’t have the Yaktrax on. On snow-covered streets /sidewalks, Yaktrax are awesome. I found that I wasn’t really hesitating when I took a step, nor really paying a lot of attention to my footing. I was also pretty well stabilized, so I didn’t feel like I’d roll my ankle if I mis-stepped. I do plan to test and see how they do in less snow, on ice, etc.

Everyone I was running with was sliding around, and everyone was curious how I was liking the Yaktrax.

The verdict: Love! Yaktrax Pro are a snow-running must. I no longer need to worry about safety when running in the snow. I recommend!
